IF YOU HAVE A HP COMPUTER AND ARE GETTING ERRORS WHEN YOU TRY TO SAVE DATA OR PRINT REPORTS, YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF MEMORY. Click the following link to go to the Download Section and download the HPProb.exe file. Double click on it to unzip it into the "My Documents" folder as HPProb.txt (a text file) on your computer. Open it with the Notepad or WordPad programs and print it. It contains instructions from HP on how to free up more memory on your computer. Get HPProb.exe NOTE: This also applies to most "pre-packaged" computers, such as Dell, Gateway, Compaq, etc.
Big G maintains an 800 number for your convenience in obtaining technical assistance. George King, (the Big G himself) writes all of Big G's Software, and is in the office from 10 AM until 3 PM central time, Monday through Friday. George works at home, and is frequently around the office at other times of the day or night. He is very good about returning phone calls, so if you have a problem, call and leave a message if you do not get him.
Listed below are some common problems and suggested solutions:
All Macintosh and MS-DOS software has been discontinued and is no longer supported.
If you are having problems with your Windows software, go to the Download section of this site and check your version number against the latest version available for download. Your version number is found by clicking Help, then About This Program while the program is running. If there is a newer version available for download, download it. The download will replace the program files only, and will not clobber your data.
ALL WINDOWS PROGRAMS: Having Trouble Getting Started -- You generally build these programs from the bottom up -- league, team, season, players, then roster etc. The manual is in the Help file. To get a brief sequence of operation, click Help, search for "Quick Start for Experienced Users" and print it out. This will give you a one page summary of what to do. Consult help topics for additional information as needed. Search Help for "Printing a Manual" for instructions on how to print a manual.
ALL WINDOWS
PROGRAMS: Program Crashes When Saving Data: Sometimes you get a Windows error
message -- could be an Invalid Page Fault, an Exception 10H error, or VFP300esl has
performed an illegal operation: In all these cases you are out of memory.
Here are some things you can try:
1) Check to see how much RAM your computer has:
a) Right click the mouse on the My Computer icon on your desktop
b) On the drop down menu, click Properties
c) On the next screen, click the Performance Tab
d) Check your Memory and System Resources -- you need 64 MB RAM.
IF your computer says you have 63 MB RAM, be very suspicious
2) Many computers load a "bunch" of software when the computer boots up
to have it available at your beck and call. The "Pre-Packaged" computers
are very bad about this. Compaq, HP, Gateway, Dell all do this. The problem is
that this "stuff" uses up your RAM -- sometimes to the point that Big G's
programs do not have enough memory to run.
Here is something you can try to see it freeing up RAM will solve your problem:
a) Click START, then click RUN
b) In the Open: box type msconfig and click OK
c) Click the Startup tab on the window which opens
d) All the items which have a check mark in the box will
automatically load when your computer stats up. The only item in this list which is
necessary for Windows is System Tray.
e) Get a sheet of paper and write down all the items with a
check mark -- all the items which automatically start
f) Now,
uncheck all items EXCEPT those listed below and click Apply. Then re-start your
computer and see if Big G's program works. Note: Some of the following may not be in your
Startup List:
System Tray
Scan Registry
Vshwin32EXE
Keyboard Manager
USBMMKBD
HPSYSDRV
HIDSERV
If the program now
works, the problem is that all that "stuff" is using too much RAM -- causing Big
G's program to run out of memory. You can leave all that "stuff" turned
off, or you can experiment by selectively turning it back on and checking to see if Big
G's program still works. You can contact the manufacturer of your computer to find
out what all that "stuff" does and decide which, if any you want ot turn back
on.
If Big G's program will not run with all the "stuff" turned off, it is
not going to run on your computer. Big G has approximately 1500 programs running on
all kinds of computers all over the country. Only about a dozen computers will not
run my software. I do not know why these computers will not work. If the
program will not run on your computer, you may return the program to the dealer from which
it was purchased for a refund.
ALL WINDOWS
PROGRAMS: Program Crashes When Printing Reports -- There are some printers
which are known to have a "memory leak" when used in Windows 95 / 98.
Several of the HP printers (both laser and ink-jet) experience this problem. The
printers use RAM when printing, but do not release it after printing, so that the printers
"hog" more and more memory until there is not enough memory left to run the
program. My HP DeskJet 1000C has this problem .
Try the following to correct the problem:
1) Click Start -- Settings -- Printers
2) Double click on your printer
3) From the menu at the top of the window click Printer -- Properties
4) Click the Details Tab -- then click Port Settings
5) Uncheck the item "Check Port State Before Printing" -- then click OK
6) Back in the Details Tab window, click Spool Settings
7) Be sure "Spool print jobs so program finishes printing faster" is
checked
8) Be sure "Start printing after first page is spooled" is checked
9) If the "Spool Data Format" setting is EMF, change it to RAW
10) Click OK to return to properties window, then click Apply
11) Click OK to close the properties window
Try printing again. If it doesn't work, go back to Spool Settings as above
and check "Print directly to printer".
If this doesn't work, try installing and using one of the Generic printer drivers.
Windows has a Generic / Text Only driver and there is also an HP Deskjet driver
which I believe is a generic Deskjet driver. To install either of these:
1) Double click on My Computer
2) Double click on the Printers folder
3) Double click on Add Printers
4) Select either the Generic or the HP Deskjet
You will need your Windows CD to load the printer driver. After loading the
new driver, try to print one of the reports you are having trouble with -- and send it to
the screen. If it prints to the screen OK, then try sending it to the printer to see
if the driver will produce satisfactory results with your printer.
If this still doesn't work, call your printer manufacturer -- or go to their web
site and download the latest printer driver.
